Saint John's Episcopal Church
Our History

St. John’s is the fourth oldest Episcopal Church in the state of California. The first Episcopal services were held in Marysville by the Rev. August Fitch who organized the church here in 1851. St. John’s parish was organized in 1853 by Bishop William Ingram Kip with the new rector arriving in October of 1854.

The original red brick church was on the northeast corner of 5th and E Streets in Marysville. During the disastrous flood of 1874, a small river steam boat tied up to the bell tower of St. John’s to deliver relief supplies. By 1933 this building was in dire need of major repairs. In 1940 the church was declared unsafe, the property sold, and the church demolished.

A new church was built on the corner of 8th and D streets that same year with the first service being offered in August 1942. All of the stained glass windows from the original church building grace the existing sanctuary.

In 1966 a major addition was made which included classroom space, kitchen and parish hall.
